The most amazing thing about the art of fiction is that it can get you to a place in between lies and truth, also known as wonder, " The willing suspension of disbelief."
Children's author, Mac Barnett's favorite quote written by Pablo Picasso says, "Art is a lie that makes us realize truth at least the truth that is given us to understand." I find this fascinating because the art of fiction is a way for the author to relate to the reader by planting an image in their head, its a way to express certain morals and values.
Barnett talks about the time when he was a summer camp counselor and he convinced the children in Berkely,California, to believe that he was a secret spy for the Queen of England. He would continue to tell them stories, which they knew were not true but yet they still believed them because they wished that they could be true. This happens not only for children but for people of all ages, because of reading we reach this stage of belief that we can comprehend in many ways.
Barnett gives us the example of Sherlock Holmes, people from all over the world travel to London to see his apartment on Bakers Street even though the number 221b never actually existed on that buildings address. Reading allows you to get attached to these fictional characters that don't even exist in real life. We know they don't exist. So why do we still get attached to them anyways?
A type of meta fictive technique is when an author or actor confesses the artificiality of a story bringing it back into reality. This is also referred to as breaking the fourth wall. My favorite part of the video is when Barnett says, that the process of breaking the fourth wall should be the opposite, we should try our best to let fiction escape and come into the real world. "I want a book to be a secret door that opens, and lets the stories out into reality."
I really enjoyed watching this TED Talk and recommend it to anyone else interested in writing and reading, its a perfect example of creativity through writing and imagination, and how reading can take you to place that you could never explore in reality. The significance of fiction is the mental journey that your mind experiences through reading, this feeling is a huge excitement.
